“The white men came with hate. The missionaries came with love.” Revd Gumbuli Warramarra, Ngukurr, Northern Territory
A hundred years ago news of massacres at Roper River, Northern Territory reached churches in the south, prompting the Church Missionary Society to send a team of Indigenous and white missionaries to set up a sanctuary there. Through interviews with indigenous elders from Arnhem Land, former and current missionaries and archival footage 100 years in the north traces the story of the missionaries through the eras of protectionism, assimilation and self-determination.
